Decorating a nursery can be exciting and overwhelming at the same time. There are so many things to consider simultaneously; you want the room to be safe for the baby, but also it should look good as well. We want to help make the process easy, so we’ve put together some tips to help the process along. We carry amazing window treatments from premium brands like Norman®, Comfortex, and more. and would love to help you choose the perfect ones for your baby’s nursery.
Our first tip is to avoid any floor-length window treatments. Floor-length curtains are a safety hazard once your baby is old enough to crawl and walk. Keep nursery window coverings short and sweet.
You also don’t want your curtains to upstage the window and the room’s architecture. Many window coverings, such as traditional drapes, take up considerable space in the window even when fully open. Counter this effect by installing hardware several inches above and to either side of the window frame. Ensure the hardware is long enough as curtain rods stretched beyond their limit can become unstable and collapse.
If you’re opting for a solid treatment, such as horizontal blinds, consider a valance to soften the window’s appearance. A fabric valance will add texture and visual interest to a room while staying out of the reach of little ones. You could even add a cornice board if you’re looking for a more dramatic look.
You can save on the cost of window coverings by choosing less expensive roller shades and customizing them with a fabric front. An opaque material will block light to help the baby sleep soundly. You can then add personality by adding a fabric of your choice to the front. Speaking of fabric, you’ll want to use a fun print. You can easily add a touch of whimsy to your baby’s room with an interesting pattern. You can easily create continuity throughout the room using the fabric to create custom bedding and accents such as throw pillows.
It’s also easy to enhance the theme of the nursery. If your theme is nautical, try framing some vintage nautical maps. Going with a princess theme? Embellish valances or cornice boards with pink tulle and other girly adornments.
Our last bit of advice is to choose your window treatments first. There’s an endless variety of paint to choose from, and it will be much easier to match a color to window treatments than vice versa. You will save yourself a lot of stress by designing the rest of the room around the window coverings.
